Jacoby Studios designed by David Chipperfield Architects is sited in Paderborn, a medieval town in the north Rhine region of Germany. It is a beautiful re-invention and extension of a series of existing buildings for a new headquarters for a family run business.
David Chipperfield Architects’ careful re-ordering and beautifully crafted additions to this monastic centre in the medieval town of Paderborn is an exemplar of how existing sites can be re-imagined.
This new headquarters which sits next to the river has been exquisitely dismantled, reassembled and extended respecting the existing historic plan to create a new context for this workplace and landscape around a new cloister.
The creation of this new headquarters building is an exceptional example of innovative and sensitive re-ordering of existing buildings within a historic setting.
The project is located within the medieval town and part of the success of this project is its response to its context and allowing this new series of existing and new buildings to be beautifully integrated with new landscape that compliments its setting within its materiality and scale.
The existing site had been a chapel and 17th century cloister and although much had been destroyed in war, many of the stone walls remained. The architects chose to respect the plan of the ruins and adapt the later buildings and extend to create a new cloister.
The new and old buildings walls harmonise and form this new edge to its setting within the city. The existing stone and brick walls were repaired and left exposed with new concrete and timber elements that delicately stitch together the parts of the ruin. Integrating the new extended form that mediate between the old and new. What evolves is a very calm and balanced set of buildings.
