Blackpool Swivelling Wind Shelters

To design a ‘swivelling wind shelter’ that would be an exciting landmark for this important seafront landscape, and contribute to a series of outdoor artworks along the South Shore Promenade in Blackpool.

Open Infrastructure

McChesney Architects and Atelier One’s wind shelter design rotates according to the prevailing wind direction to shield the occupants from the elements.

The shape was born out of a distillation of the key required elements: a vane, to turn the structure, and a baffle to shelter the inhabitant from the wind.

The first shelter was completed in spring 2006 with a second added a few months later.
