Bonn Square

The objective was to transform Bonn Square, a historic city square, which had fractured spatial character and low overall quality, into a high quality contemporary city square.

Open Infrastructure

Designed by Graeme Massie Architects, Bonn Square is now a flexible, events space which provides a safe and accessible venue.

The project has completely changed the character of the square and is a flexible, events space which is an accessible venue for both formal and informal civic events. As the flagship project in the redevelopment of Oxford's west end, Bonn Square acts as a catalyst for further regeneration.

Fiona Bartholomew, Principal Planning Officer, Oxford City Council said:

'We wanted to refurbish a badly run-down visually fragmented public square in Oxford city centre. It was a considerable design challenge and a design competition was felt to be an ideal way to draw on a wide range of ideas and expertise. The RIBA gave a superb, professional service which was excellent value for money.'
