2019 marks the launch of the landmark 21st edition of Sir Banister Fletcher’s A History of Architecture, published by Bloomsbury in partnership with RIBA and the University of London. Alongside two stunning print volumes, an all-new digital platform opens up access to the text and forms the foundation for the Bloomsbury Architecture Library.
Together with the University of London, we've been joint custodians of the copyright to Banister Fletcher's History of Architecture since 1953. We commissioned the 21st edition to breathe new life into Banister Fletcher’s legacy, in a conscious effort to transform the book into a truly globalised history of architecture. The result is a vital break with the imperialist world-view permeating earlier editions, and one example of how we’re embracing our responsibility to reveal modern, relevant narratives through the materials entrusted to us in the RIBA Collections.
