Where the Work Begins display
Explore the evolution of the artist workspace and its relationship to architecture
Where the Work Begins explores the connection between art and architecture. Drawing on our collections the display traces the evolution of the artist’s workspace from the 1800s to the present day.
Inspired by the Liverpool Biennial’s theme 'BEDROCK' - a nod to Liverpool’s sandstone foundations and social fabric - the studio is explored as a space for creation, experimentation, and artistic expression. From the grand ateliers of the past to industrial warehouses and precarious urban spaces of today.
Featured artists and architects include Dora Gordine, Denys Lasdun, Antony Gormley, MJ Long, and Anish Kapoor. The display also looks at Liverpool's local art scene, uncovering the histories, original use and architectural significance of its studio spaces.
