1922 Royal Academy guidebook
Among the papers of architectural historian Jill Allibone is this 1922 exhibition guidebook for the Royal Academy show.
Scanning the list of works that were on display in the architectural room highlights the type of buildings that were being designed - and celebrated - at the time. With the First World War still fresh in the nation's memory it's perhaps not surprising that the exhibited works feature a huge number of memorials, such as Adams Holden & Pearson's War Memorial Gateway at Clifton College, Bristol.
As well as indicating an appetite for memorials, the catalogue also bears the marks of empire, with several government projects featured by Edwin Lutyens and Robert Tor Russell for New Delhi while under the colonial rule of the British Raj.
