Hayling Beachlands competition design
Following WWII, the construction of outdoor and indoor swimming facilities not surprisingly declined. Ambition, however, did not! In 1946 Havant Council launched a competition to redevelop the Beachlands area of Hayling Island. The winning entry by Vine & Vine was a vast, enterprising scheme, including an open-air salt water bathing pool. The unusual arrangement of triangular projections maintained uninterrupted views out to sea despite the addition of 1,000 beach huts with car access.
