Eligibility criteria

IN UK 

to become a Chartered member, you need one of the following:

  • RIBA Parts 1, 2 and 3 (or equivalent**)
    OR
  • A qualification in architecture which is covered by the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC)
    AND
    access to the profession of architect in the EU country in which the qualification was gained
    AND
    a minimum of two years of professional practical experience 

    JOIN online or fill out a PDF application form if you meet these criteria to apply from within the UK

OUTSIDE THE UK

to become a Chartered member, you need one of the following:

  • RIBA Parts 1, 2 and 3 (or equivalent**)
    OR
  • A qualification in architecture which is covered by the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC)
    AND
    access to the profession of architect in the EU country in which the qualification was gained
    AND
    a minimum of two years of professional practical experience
  • OR
    Registered with the ARB via an annual ARB Mutual Recognition Agreement
    AND
    A minimum of two years professional practical experience, where the applicant has not passed Part 3
  • OR
    RIBA Parts 1 and 2 with at least two years professional post-qualification experience

  • OR
    Proof of full architect membership of one of 12 international institutes:
    • American Institute of Architects (AIA)
    • Branchevereniging Nederlandse Architectenbureaus (BNA)
    • Bund Deutscher Architekten (BDA)
    • Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA)
    • Japan Institute of Architects (JIA)
    • New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA)
    • Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM)
    • Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC)
    • Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA)
    • Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI)
    • South African Institute of Architects (SAIA)
    • Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA)
