RIBA announces judges of 2020 President's Medals student awards

We have revealed the names of the judges who will be selecting the winners of the 2020 RIBA Bronze, Silver, and Dissertation Medals.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has revealed the names of the judges who will be selecting the winners of the 2020 RIBA Bronze, Silver, and Dissertation Medals.

Awarded for the first time in 1836, the President's Medals are the RIBA’s oldest awards, and are regarded as the most prestigious awards in architectural education worldwide. The Bronze and Silver Medals are awarded to the best design projects completed by students during, respectively, RIBA Part 1 or Part 2 courses (or equivalent), whereas the Dissertation Medal rewards accomplished written work produced at either RIBA Part 1 or Part 2 (or equivalent).

2020 President's Medals Judges

The Dissertation Medal judging panel will include:

  • Chair: Harriet Harriss (Dean of Architecture at the Pratt Institute, NY, USA)
  • Ben Campkin (Professor of History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK)
  • Mia Roth Čerina (Architect and Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Zagreb, Croatia)
  • Samia Henni (Associate Professor of Architecture at Cornell University, USA, and Director of the Society of Architectural Historians)
  • Dorian Wiszniewski (Architect and Senior Academic at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, UK)

The Bronze Medal panel will include:

  • Chair: David Gloster (RIBA Director of Education)
  • Nicky Watson (North East’s representative on RIBA Council; RIBA Vice-President for Education, RIBA Board Trustee)
  • Graham Farmer (Professor of Architecture and Director of the Architecture Programmes at Newcastle University, UK)
  • Oliver Froome-Lewis (Architect; Associate Professor and BSc Architecture Course Director at the University of Reading, UK)
  • Tara Gbolade (Director at Gbolade Design Studio; Sustainability Lead (Environmental & Socio-Economic at Harlow & Gilston Garden Town Placeshaping; Design Review Panel Member for Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, and Merton; RIBA Rising Star 2018)
  • Sara Shafiei (Founding Partner at Saraben architecture and design studio; Director of the MSci Architecture Programme at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK)

The RIBA Silver Medal panel will feature:

  • Chair: David Gloster (RIBA Director of Education)
  • Nicky Watson (North East’s representative on RIBA Council; RIBA Vice-President for Education, RIBA Board Trustee)
  • Arthur Mamou-Mani (Owner, Mamou-Mani Ltd Architects; Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Westminster, UK)
  • Mauricio Pezo (Founding Director at Pezo von Ellrichshausen; Associate Professor of the Practice in Architecture – co-shared position with Sofía von Ellrichshausen – at Cornell University, USA)
  • Ola Uduku (Research Professor in Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture, UK)

This year, the RIBA has invited a record 426 schools of architecture located in 82 countries to enter student work for these awards. Each school can nominate up to two entries for the Bronze Medal, up to two entries for the Silver Medal, and one entry for the Dissertation Medal.

The winners of the 2020 RIBA President’s Medals will be announced later in the year.
