2023 RIBA East Midlands Award winners announced

A stunning new café in the Peak District National Park (Destination Longshaw) and an oak-framed contemporary extension to a 19th century estate cottage in Lincolnshire (Old Four Row) are amongst the five projects announced as winners of a 2023 RIBA East Midlands Award.

A stunning new café in the Peak District National Park (Destination Longshaw) and an oak-framed contemporary extension to a 19th century estate cottage in Lincolnshire (Old Four Row) are amongst the five projects announced as winners of a 2023 RIBA East Midlands Award. Presented since 1966, RIBA’s awards set the standard for great architecture across the country.

The winners were announced at a ceremony this evening, at which Lincoln Cathedral’s striking new Visitor Centre was named as RIBA East Midlands Building of the Year Award 2023 (sponsored by EH Smith). 

The 2023 RIBA East Midlands Award winning projects are:

  • Destination Longshaw by Architect Studio Gedye Ltd - A new café for the National Trust in the Peak District National Park 
  • Lincoln Cathedral Visitor Centre by Simpson & Brown -Development of the Old Deanery into a new visitor centre with learning centre, exhibition gallery and outdoor space 
  • Maple Lodge by Levitate - Contemporary new home in a conservation area in Leicestershire Levitate  
  • Museum of Making Derby Silk Mill by Bauman Lyons Architects Ltd - Major transformation of an industrial building in Derby 
  • Old Four Row by Daykin Marshall Studio - Oak-framed extension to a 19th century George Gilbert Scott designed cottage in rural Lincolnshire 

RIBA President, Simon Allford, said:

“Winning a RIBA regional award is a fantastic achievement. These projects, selected by a rigorous peer review process, represent the very best of the region’s new architecture. Inspiring buildings and spaces bring joy to all our lives, and this year’s award winners certainly fit that bill. Many congratulations to all.”

  • Lincoln Cathedral Visitor Centre - RIBA East Midlands Building of the Year 2023 (sponsored by EH Smith) and RIBA Conservation Award 2023
  • Museum of Making Derby Silk Mill - RIBA East Midlands Project Architect of the Year Award 2023 and RIBA East Midlands Client of the Year Award 2023
  • Old Four Row - RIBA East Midlands Small Project of the Year Award 2023 (sponsored by Gaggenau)

RIBA East Midlands Award winners will now be considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, to be announced on 22 June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced later in the year.
