During Spring/Summer 2019, seven RIBA Architecture Ambassador partnerships took place across Leicestershire as part of the RIBA's National Schools Programme. 13 Architecture Ambassadors (including students and practitioners) delivered 34 hours’ worth of workshops to 285 secondary students and 71 primary pupils in and around the county.
The Schools Ambassador programme is part of the RIBA's National Schools Programme which brings together architecture professionals and schools, helping young people to explore and understand the built environment. The following partnerships took place in and around Leicestershire: Tom Allen from Artistic Industries with Catmose College; Richard Crowson and Daniel Lowe from Watson Batty Architects with South Charnwood High School; Nita Varia and Fiona Romankiw from Stephen George and Partners with Sparkenhoe Community Primary School; Sanjay Mistry from SKM Architects with Beauchamp College; Muthar Al-Salloum from MAS Architecture with Gaddesby Primary; Neelkanth Depala, David Hickman, Laura Hickman and Amy Cawley from Hickman & Smith Architects with Rushey Mead Academy; Jay Sayer and Joseph Silva from UMC Architects with Kesteven and Grantham Girls School.
RIBA East Midlands Education Group Chair, Richard Crowson, of Watson Batty Architects was involved in the workshops and said:
"As a local practitioner and Chair of the East Midlands Education Group I was delighted to see so many practices and colleagues support RIBA’s fantastic architecture ambassador scheme across Leicestershire earlier this year. The diverse range of project work, dedication and enjoyment shown was brilliant to see. Particular thanks to Katy Wade (RIBA Learning), RIBA East Midlands colleagues and of course to the wonderful staff and students in our participating schools."
Some of the work will be displayed in an exhibition between 14 and 19 October at Leicester's LCB Depot as part of the Leicestershire and Rutland Society of Architects (LRSA's) Love Architecture Festival.
