RIBA statement on Grenfell Tower fire

RIBA Chief Executive Alan Vallance on Wednesday's fire at Grenfell Tower

16 June 2017

RIBA Chief Executive Alan Vallance said:

“The RIBA called for a public enquiry in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy and will be working with our members to provide technical and expert evidence to it.

“I’m shocked that a fire of this magnitude, which has claimed so many lives, was able to take hold so quickly. Until we have a much clearer understanding of the cause and spread of the fire at Grenfell Tower, and any impact of the building's design and fire escape procedures, it would be irresponsible of me or the Institute to speculate further.

“We will be continuing to draw on our members’ expert understanding as we develop advice for our profession and the wider industry. We are engaging with individual members and practices on a one-to-one basis. RIBA members with information or concerns should contact our members’ information line on 020 7307 3600 or their RIBA regional team www.architecture.com/my-local-riba.”
