Inside the RSAW Council: A member's journey on impact, volunteer power, and shaping the future

Hear from RSAW member Chris Brimble on his transformative experience as part of the RSAW Council, highlighting the personal and professional benefits of getting involved.

04 February 2025

The Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW) Council plays a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of architecture in Wales. As part of RIBA (the Royal Institute of British Architects), the RSAW Council advises on key architectural matters; ensuring that the profession evolves to meet the specific needs of our nation. It acts as a voice for the profession, guiding RIBA Members and partners on important issues while reviewing the impact of our regional operational plans against established targets.

Our council is more than just a governing body—it's a platform for collaboration and discussion, where strategic issues that affect architecture are debated and solutions are crafted. By sharing insights and experiences, the RSAW Council helps strengthen the architecture profession, both locally and nationally.

At the heart of the RSAW Council are our dedicated honorary officers, including Dan Benham (President), Alan Francis (President Elect), and Gavin Traylor (Immediate Past President), who provide leadership and continuity within the council's work. With a strong focus on fostering volunteer involvement and participation in council elections, we strive to create a diverse and inclusive environment that reflects the full spectrum of the profession.

For those interested in learning more about the RSAW Council's work, or exploring how to get involved in shaping the future of architecture in Wales, we spoke to Chris Brimble, RIBA Council Member, who offers a deeper look into our mission, the importance of volunteering, and the roles within the Council.

Member experience: Chris Brimble, RIBA Council Member, on why he joined the RSAW

"I initially got involved with RSAW Council following an invite from an existing member to put my name forward. This followed several previous conversations where, as a sole practitioner, I had voiced concerns about working in relative isolation and how best to maintain connections with fellow practitioners beyond the odd CPD seminar.

To be honest, I was not at all sure at first. And having worked for nearly ten years on what I considered to be very modest projects; I wasn’t at all sure how relevant my experience would be as a representative for RSAW. There is a school of thought that says new learning happens when you’re outside your comfort zone, so I tentatively put my name in the hat, filled with trepidation about my lack of knowledge and experience, and fully expecting to be a fish out of water.

Those who know me well will know I am passionate (at times excitable) about the role of architects in society; and as a council member it is a real privilege to have the opportunity to contribute to discussions relating to practice and how RSAW supports architects throughout Wales. The experience has been transformative in terms of my professional and personal development, and I’ve been able to further develop my skills and knowledge as they relate to organisational governance and decision making. I have also made so many new connections and come to realise that there is value in sharing my perspectives as a sole practitioner.

Being aware of RSAW activities more fully has also resulted in me taking part in the wonderful RIBA mentoring programme and being invited into schools of architecture to share my knowledge and experience with the next generation of architects.

It is important to remember that the RSAW is a membership organisation. The strength of the society lies in the level of participation and engagement of its members, at branch level and within RSAW council. I have learned so much from my time on council, rediscovered a passion for architecture, and met some wonderful and supportive people who’ve helped me break away from those initial concerns - and a certain degree of imposter syndrome.

If you are passionate about architecture and the practice of architecture, I would urge you to consider putting your name forward for RSAW council in the future. The society represents a diverse community of practitioners and academics across Wales, and it would benefit us all to have a council with the broadest range of voices contributing to the development of our professional body going forward."
