Each year, MIPIM – the world's leading real estate market event – provides us with an opportunity to showcase and promote the unique skills and capabilities of Chartered Architects (our members) not only as designers of buildings, but as forward-thinking, solution-driven leaders.
It also provides us with a platform to advocate and garner support for a better built environment; for high-quality, safe and sustainable places and spaces that deliver for communities, both now and in the future.
Our conversations will focus on actions we can take to build a low carbon future: from retrofitting our housing stock, to advocating for whole life carbon targets, to improving core procurement processes.
As the profession continues to seek solutions to various societal issues – from housing shortages to school safety failures – delivering a low carbon-built environment, and cities in particular, remains at the top of our agenda. Urban spaces account for more than 70% of all carbon emissions, and they are growing at a rapid rate, with 68% of people expected to live in cities by 2050.
Through various activities and events on topics ranging from ‘Cities and Net Zero’ to ‘A Greener Manchester’, this year’s delegation of 28 Chartered Practices led by RIBA President, Muyiwa Oki, will promote our vision for a low carbon-built environment and sustainable urban development.
RIBA President Muyiwa Oki said:
“As cities become more populated and emissions grow, this is our time, as architects, to take the lead in urban development and regeneration. At the forefront of my agenda is the advocacy for reimagining the architect's role beyond building design. ‘Architecture without boundaries’ – this showcasing how we can positively impact people’s lives. It means focussing on positive urban placemaking, and its role in fostering sustainable communities and driving environmental stewardship. This is the message I’ll be bringing to MIPIM 2024.
RIBA Chief Executive Dr Valerie Vaughan-Dick MBE said:
“As the world's largest real estate event, MIPIM provides us with a truly valuable opportunity to engage with global real estate players and share insights into global trends and innovations. For RIBA – and our 28 Chartered Practices – it provides us a with a platform to demonstrate the critical work we are doing and bring architects’ voice to the table.”
Chair of the RIBA Board of Trustees Jack Pringle said:
“There’s still work to be done to raise awareness of the critical role architects play in delivering a low carbon future, and to better join up our efforts across the built environment sector. I’ve been going to MIPIM for over 20 years, and I’m looking forward once again to connect with colleagues and friends from around the globe.”
