A purpose built inpatient unit for St David’s Hospice, University of Bangor Arts and Innovation Centre and the restoration of Yr Ysgwrn to create a new museum are among three of the six buildings shortlisted for this year’s RSAW Welsh Architecture Awards.
Two private homes and Ysgol Bae Baglan, a school in Port Tallbot, also made the shortlist.
11 entries were submitted for consideration this year and all buildings will be visited by a jury panel led by Wales Millennium Centre architect Jonathan Adams in the coming weeks.
The buildings in the running for RSAW Welsh Architecture Awards 2018 are:
- Brook House, Cardiff by Downs Merrifield Architects
- Crud Yr Allt, Cardiff by Loyn & Co Architects
- St David’s Hospice, New In-Patient Unit, Newport by KKE Architects
- University of Bangor Arts and Innovation Centre, Bangor by Grimshaw
- Yr Ysgwrn, Gwynedd by Purcell
- Ysgol Bae Baglan, Port Talbot by Stride Treglown Ltd
All shortlisted buildings will now be assessed by a regional jury with the winning buildings announced at an awards ceremony at Cornerstone, Cardiff on Thursday 31 May.
If successful, the winners of Welsh Architecture Awards will be considered for a RIBA National (UK) Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, the results of which will be announced in June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize, the best new building of the year, will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings in July and the Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.
