RIBA announces events programme for London Festival of Architecture 2021

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has today announced its LFA 2021 programme of events.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce its programme of events as part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) 2021.

Throughout June, the RIBA will host physical and online events responding to this year’s LFA theme of ‘care’. These will explore how architecture practices and individuals can care for each other, the industry and our planet, and how spaces can impact us mentally and emotionally.

The LFA lineup will include a range of insightful talks, film screenings and workshops:

Talks

RIBA London: Caring for the profession’s wellbeing, Wednesday 2 June, 6.30pm to 8.30pm

The pandemic has drastically affected studio culture in London architecture practices. In this evening of several online talks, we will examine new ways of working that could be here to stay, how employers are caring for staff wellbeing and offer some practical techniques to stay happy and balanced at work. RIBA London: Caring about an inclusive workplace culture, Wednesday 9 June, 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Over the past year race, gender, identity and inequality have dominated the headlines, prompting protest, debate, anger, grief and change. Many London practices have been examining their workplace culture and the diversity of their teams. This panel discussion will look at how the profession can address diversity issues and actions needed to create a caring workplace culture where everyone feels supported and welcomed. On documenting forms of industry: A conversation with photographer Alastair Philip Wiper, Friday 11 June, 5pm to 6pm

This special online conversation with award-winning photographer Alastair Philip Wiper will examine the subject and context of his large-scale works, which highlight mass production, consumerism and their intricate relationship with the environment. More information here.

Architects Beyond Architecture, Tuesday 15 June, 5pm to 6.30pm

For the fourth online talk in the Architecture Anew series, we will be joined by architect and documentary filmmaker Mark E Breeze, researcher Lindsay Bremner, Forensic Architecture and award-winning architect Chris Hildrey to hear how they use architectural skills to create socially motivated projects beyond buildings. Chaired by Harriet Harriss and Roberta Marcaccio. More information here.

RIBA London: Caring for the Planet, Wednesday 16 June, 6.30pm to 8.30pm

In this online talk RIBA London will explore the various ways architects, developers and Local Authorities are working to create a greener London and putting climate change and sustainability at the forefront of their work. More information here.

Film screenings

The Royal Tenenbaums: Film screening and Q&A with Rooftop Film Club, Monday 14 June, Doors open 8.00pm, 9.00pm to 11.20pm

The first in our new collaborative series of screenings with Rooftop Film Club, at South London’s Bussey Building, will include a screening of The Royal Tenenbaums with a short Q&A - speaker TBC. More information here.

Parasite: Film screening and Q&A with Rooftop Film Club, Tuesday 22 June, Doors open 8.00pm, 9.00pm to 11.45pm

This outdoor summer screening of the highly acclaimed film Parasite will be preceded by a Q&A session with architecture and design writer Will Wiles, to explore the film’s impactful setting and interiors. More information here.

I am Love: Film screening and Q&A with Rooftop Film Club, Monday 28 June, Doors open 8.00pm, 9.00pm to 11.30pm

Ahead of the outdoor summer screening of the 2009 Italian drama I am Love, we will be joined by architect and tutor David Kohn for a Q&A session. David will examine the film’s setting, Villa Necchi, which has inspired his own work. More information here.

Workshops

Forms of Industry: Online architectural photoday, Sunday 13 June, 10am to 4pm

Architectural photographer Anthony Palmer and Forms of Industry curator Rodrigo Orrantia Gomez will join participants for this architectural photoday, to explore changing attitudes towards mass production and sustainability. Explore and Make Online: Creative art workshops for ages 50 and over, Thursday 24 June, 10.30am to 11.15am or 12pm to 12.45pm

Being creative can improve our wellbeing. ‘Explore and Make Online’ workshops invite those aged 50 or above to create their own artwork, drawing on RIBA collections for inspiration. More information here.
