On 24 June 2021, the RIBA hosted its fourth instalment of the RIBA Gulf live lunch talks, with Peter Jackson, FRIBA livestreamed from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
This exclusive event consisted of an interview with Peter Jackson on his career, hosted by Azlina Bulmer, RIBA Director of International, a presentation on Sharjah Architecture in the United Arab Emirates, and a Q&A session.
Peter Jackson is a founding member of the RIBA Gulf Chapter and assisted its legal recognition in the UAE, and premises for the institute’s first Gulf office in Sharjah. He is also an Hon. Treasurer of the RIBA Gulf Chapter. At the end of November 2020, it was announced that Peter was one of eight members to become a 2021 RIBA Fellow for his contributions to architecture and the community.
Since the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Sharjah has developed a public architecture of a strongly Islamic character under the guiding hand of HH the Ruler, Dr Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi. The first part of Peter Jackson’s presentation showcased the stitching together of the city through traditional Islamic forms, in forming Sharjah’s distinctive urban identity. The second part focused on recent conservation projects and striking new museums, educational interpretive centres, and other civic buildings that the Ruler has commissioned across the Emirate.
