Celebrating Hong Kong Children’s Day 2023, RIBA Hong Kong Chapter hosted a mural workshop in collaboration with Catholic Mission School (CMS). An interior wall at the school premises spanning 10 meters in length was remodelled with a colourful mural by the primary school students. They were guided by professional mural artist Ms. Riitta Kuisma and volunteer architects, academics, and architecture students.
Fifty students aged 9-12 representing different nationalities participated in this full-day workshop. The mural depicts the CMS vision and mission, themes pertinent to Hong Kong: cultural diversity, liveable city, nature and well-being.
The workshop commenced with opening remarks from Principal Joyce Chung Oi Man and RIBA HK Chapter Chair Dr. Ruffina Thilakaratne emphasizing the importance of sustainability and architecture in shaping our environment. The Principal spoke of the school’s plan to integrate architecture courses into their STEAM curriculum, a pioneering initiative at the Hong Kong primary school.
In support of this progressive and meaningful initiative the RIBA HK Chapter donated books on architecture to inspire the students.
The RIBA Hong Kong Chapter would like to thank Ms. Chung, Ms. Pang, Ms. Kuisma, all the volunteers - architects, students, photographer – and the talented children who participated so enthusiastically and made this event a huge success. Riitta Kuisma taught the children mural painting techniques and the workshop reused old paint brushes to reinforce the importance of sustainability.
Inspired by the talent and capacity of the children and enormous support received from the school, the RIBA Hong Kong Chapter look forward to future collaborations with the Catholic Mission School and professionals involved.
