RIBA International members forum 2024

RIBA International's first members forum in February 2024 paved the way for this year's programme of events helping members connect globally and showcase the brilliant work of our chapters.

19 March 2024

In February 2024, we hosted two online sessions offering our international members an opportunity to hear RIBA President Muyiwa Oki's vision for establishing a global institute. Members from our international regions also shared insights into their engagement with their local communities.

Introductions were given by RIBA International council representatives, Waldemar Kohler (Europe region), Phil Alsopp (Americas region), Ruffina Thilakaratne (Asia and Australasia region) and Mark Harris (Middle East and Africa region). These engaging sessions, chaired by Vice-President Membership Tom Foggin, gave members the chance to ask questions and engage with global representatives in the lively Q&A sessions.

"I thought it was great. As a septuagenarian, I was delighted to hear and see lively, very fresh, creative young architects - [it] gave me hope. I have been an RIBA Member for 43 years - I am encouraged by its current progressive direction of travel" - Paul Leech, Principal of consultancy in design and studies

The online sessions proved to be an excellent opportunity to celebrate local initiatives and the cross-fertilise ideas amongst international peers.

Future forum topic suggestions from members were;

  • circular urban economy and low carbon design
  • best practice Passivhaus architecture
  • culture, sustainability, and global marketing
  • what more can RIBA do for its international members?

Looking ahead

Our international chapters are currently actively involved in local initiatives such as Singapore Archifest, Hong Kong schools visit, and events for emerging architects in May.

The Gulf Chapter is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year which will include a not-to-be missed exhibition at 66 Portland Place on Sustainability - past, present and future, a competition at Dubai Design Week, a gala dinner, guided tour of Al Bastakiya district, and a chapter reception at Cityscape Riyadh.

More to follow as we continue sharing and exploring future plans for the RIBA branches and regions who are the grass roots activists and campaigners.
