The 2023 Pritzker Prize, one of architecture's most prestigious accolades, was awarded to David Chipperfield on 7 March 2023. Born in 1953, Chipperfield set up his eponymous practice in 1984 which has produced projects including the Musuem of Modern Literature, Marbach am Neckar, recipient of the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007. In 2011, he was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in recognition of his lifetime's work and service to the profession.
RIBA President Simon Allford said:
"Many congratulations to Royal Gold Medallist David Chipperfield for his practice's work being recognised by the award of The Pritzker Prize. David’s four decades of designing, building, teaching, and reflecting on architecture make him a most worthy recipient
David is an important figure in architecture because he is a globally celebrated architect who is distinguished by the fact that he has always recognised the vital role architecture has to play as background as well, as on occasion, foreground. His work be it in the field of art, commerce, education or housing is always about a response to place, to the city and its citizens. Socially responsible, considered and regardless of whether it is new build or repair and reinvention - or any combination thereof - it is responsive, considered and quietly delightful."
