RIBA responds to government’s reviewed take on Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)

Our response to the government’s action plan to ensure EPCs are fit for the future.

01 October 2020

Earlier this week the government published a summary of responses to the 2018 Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) consultation and an action plan to ensure EPCs are fit for the future.

In response, RIBA President, Alan Jones, said:

“This action plan to reform EPCs marks a step in the right direction.

Acknowledgement that EPCs must better reflect real world performance is vital to improving the energy efficiency of our housing stock – and something the RIBA has long been calling for.

Recognition that EPCs are not appropriate for complex non-domestic buildings is also positive; we have been clear that Display Energy Certificates (DECs) must be adopted in these settings.

We need all of our buildings to be more energy efficient, for the people who live in them and the environment. But we cannot improve until we know exactly how they perform technically. The government must make these necessary changes with pace.”
