The RIBA has today responded to the standardisation of A-level results outlined by government.
RIBA President, Alan Jones, said:
“Postcodes and past performance of schools cannot determine the trajectory of individual A-level students wishing to study for a career in architecture. Determining A-level outcomes of individuals based on previous overall performance of the school prevents the proper recognition of exceptional students striving hard to excel above their peers.
If this government is keen to “level up” society, it must ensure equal opportunity for all. We cannot allow average A-level students from high performing schools to be carried onwards, while high performing students from other schools are held back. The government needs to rethink how it has determined A-level outcomes and the appeal process, ahead of any announcement of the GCSE results. The architecture profession has to represent society as a whole and equitable access to study and become an architect is essential.”
