The South West had their best year ever in the 44th annual Great Britain & Ireland RIBA Inter Regional Golf Championships, at Trevose Golf Club in Cornwall.
South West's Mark Amey of Brightspace Architects was crowned Architect Golfer of the Year, whilst the South West team were just beaten to the team title by thirteen time winners Scotland. The 2nd place finish is the highest placing the South West have achieved in a competition normally dominated by teams from Scotland, Yorkshire and Ireland. This year's event also featured a strong team from the USA amongst its 70 plus entrants.
South West captain Andrew McLoughlin commented, 'The tournament was a great success on the course for the South West and a great success off the course too, as we were hosts this year. Our thanks goes to our headline sponsor Brunel Insurance, longstanding sponsor Forbo, together with Kohler and Murray & Willis for generously supporting the event.'
Champion golfer Mark Amey said, ' I've been playing since 2003, we have played at some fantastic venues including Turnberry, Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale, Carnoustie and Royal St George's, but it's pleasing to win the title on home soil. Hopefully our success will encourage more golfers in the region to join the team.'
The South West Golf Team will be hosting a 'region golf day' in the Spring of 2019, where they hope more men and lady golfers from the profession will come and play. All are welcome, whether just to meet fellow golfers or with a view to joining the 7 player South West squad. Please email Roger at rgoodliff@fm-architects.co.uk to register your interest. Next year's event is to be held at the dramatic duneland links course, Portstewart in Northern Ireland, in September, where the South West will be hoping to go one better.
