RIBA responds to State of the Nation report by Government’s Social Mobility Commission

30 April 2019

RIBA President, Ben Derbyshire, said:

“Whilst we welcome today’s State of the Nation report by the government’s Social Mobility Commission, it doesn’t reveal any surprises. It is unacceptable that inequality is rife in the UK, favouring those who are able to move region - particularly to London. Talented professionals should be able to thrive wherever they are based. For that to happen, the government must provide regions and Local Authorities with powers to better develop their potential for growth including investment in infrastructure and housing.

We welcome the report’s recognition that apprenticeships are a key tool in overcoming socio-economic barriers. We must ensure that all opportunities, including the newly-approved architecture apprenticeship standards, attract students from all backgrounds.”
