The 2019 RIBA East Midlands Student Awards have been awarded to students from the University of Lincoln and from the Leicester School of Architecture, De Montfort University, for Parts 1 and 2, respectively.
RIBA East Midlands Education Group received a total of sixteen submissions for this year's awards. These were from five schools of architecture, all with RIBA-validated courses or candidate course status across the East Midlands.
The prize for Part 1 has been awarded to Cameron Stebbing, from the University of Lincoln. For Part 2, Gabriele Adomaityte from the Leicester School of Architecture, De Montfort University, has been been recognised. Both students will receive their certificates and £100 prizes at the RIBA East Midlands Awards event next year.
The judging panel described Cameron Stebbing's work, 'Hyper-Parliament', as: "a standout submission representing a high quality Part 1 project, that met all aspects of the student awards criteria. A well developed and fascinating concept illustrated in tremendous detail at all levels and scales; this design displayed a strong tectonic approach to materiality and architectural expression."
The judges described Part 2 award winner Gabriele Adomaityte's scheme, 'The Singing Valley Project', as: "an imaginative design solution responding to site context, and the strong traditions and identity of a local community set in the natural landscape. Both material and structure combine to reflect the heritage of the local area in a contemporary tectonic response. Excellent presentation across all levels with considerable attention to detail."
The judging panel - led by RIBA East Midlands Education Group Chair and Regional Director of Watson Batty Architects, Richard Crowson - also comprised Professor Kevin Singh, Head of School at Birmingham School of Architecture, Birmingham City University, and Nicola Pettman, Associate with Stephen George + Partners.
