RIBA Immediate Past President Jane Duncan OBE has been awarded an Honorary Degree as Doctor of Design from UWE Bristol in recognition of pioneering work on sustainability, fire safety, and increased diversity in architecture.

Over 80 RIBA members from across the UK gathered in Bristol on 11 to 12 July for the RIBA Members Forum 2019 to celebrate, share ideas and activity, and explore future plans for the RIBA branches and regions who are the grass roots activists and campaigners of the Institute.

RIBA President Elect Alan Jones spent four days in the South West in recent weeks as he visited the RIBA Wessex and RIBA South West regions to take part in university shows, meet members, and engage with our regional partners.

Our five schools of architecture reveal the future talent of the profession at the summer shows in late May and June. RIBA will be awarding Graduate and Postgraduate Prizes at many of the schools supported by the RIBA Local Initiative Fund. All welcome at the launch and shows.

A theatre, a boat house, a school, a burial ground and a pub are amongst the fourteen buildings shortlisted for the RIBA Awards in the South West of England from 48 entries in 2019.

RIBA South West Ask an Architect is an opportunity for local architects from RIBA Chartered Practice to meet with members of the public in one-to-one consultations, offering advice and expertise on plans and schemes as well as promoting the profession and hopefully picking up a new project or two.

Over 500 students and architects attended the RIBA Annual Lecture 2018 series in partnership with our fabulous South West universities from October to November. Seeking to inspire the next generation of architects through hearing the stories behind award-winning and innovative architecture, and journeys into architecture, the lectures mixed up students and practicing RIBA architects to stimulate new student-professional connections, and provided a window into the work of the RIBA.

Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed a number of new branch chairs to our group of involved members driving activity and influence across the RIBA South West and RIBA Wessex regions.
