Young Architectural Practitioners Forum

RIBA North East established a group of newly qualified architects from various regional practices, with the aim of creating a stronger, more informed and more engaged network of newly qualified architects who will help raise the profile of architecture in the region.

The YAPF aims to support architects in their first eight years of qualification to help build networks across the profession.

If you are a newly qualified architect and would like to join the YAPF, please contact Amy Tomlinson to receive the latest news and events communications.

YAPF Committee

The YAPF Chair is elected by RIBA North East Members and sits on the Regional Council. From this, a small committee was formed by local practices.

YAPF ambition

'To create a stronger, more informed and more engaged network of newly qualified architects and help raise the profile of architecture in the region'

YAPF events

Led by a committee of local RIBA members and supported by the RIBA, the YAPF provides a range of events and activities organised under the following themes:

  • Learn
  • Communicate
  • Engage

YAPF events are primarily designed to support young practitioners in the first eight years following qualification, though unless otherwise stated, YAPF events will be open to all architects, including architectural students and professionals within the built environment. However, RIBA members will always be offered a discounted ticket price and some events will be held exclusively for them.

Committee members:

Andrew Thompson  (Chair) - FaulknerBrowns Architects

"After being an active committee member for almost two years I'm delighted to be taking over as chair in what is an exciting time for the YAPF. After its inception the forum has gone from strength to strength under the stewardship of its founding members, whom it has been a pleasure to work alongside. Now though, myself and the our other committee members are looking forward to continuing to grow and develop our network and events programme and continue to support the regions young architects."

Kayleigh Scott-Greener - Medical Architecture
Committee Role: Learn Events

"My role as Learn Representative is to help promote and champion YAPF events, particularly the Skills for Success seminars and be part of the team responsible for making the YAPF presence grow. I very much enjoy getting to know people from all walks of life and believe there is power in communication. I hope to engage with others working in the built environment and provide support for students and newly qualified professionals."

Cassie Burgess-Rose - xsite architecture LLP
Committee Role: Engage Events

"An outgoing, avid seeker of opportunities to meet and interact with new people and nurture existing relationships. My inquisitive research interests, involvement in teaching at Newcastle University and enthusiasm for encouraging learning from experience of problem solving during construction means that I endeavour to arrange engaging events that tell the story of buildings through their construction and post use, as well as look to further engage with building users and community."

Jenny Conroy - Doonan Architects
Committee Role: Engage Events

"I am a project architect at Doonan Architects in Hexham which is a small practice with a focus on rural domestic projects and conservation, although we cover a wide range of projects. As one of the Engage Representatives, I hope to give all young practitioners in the region an opportunity to see exceptional built works first hand. By visiting buildings of a variety of types and scales, we will be able to explore architecture outside of our day-to-day practice and find new inspiration through this cross-fertilisation."

Hannah Darmody - POD

"My role as the YAPF communicate representative is to deliver social events around topics that encourage interdisciplinary conversation relevant to the industry today. The role appealed to me as I believe these events offer a great opportunity to expose ourselves as young architects to other schools of thoughts. The more we as young professionals broaden our areas of influence and engage with other creative and construction industry professionals the more we grow as successful and influential architects."
