Tunnels can go underground, under the sea, through mountains, rocks, or soil. Tunnels can be made with lots of different materials and by lots of different things – people, machines, animals, and insects! Tunnels connect two (or more) places sensibly and directly, or can be designed to confuse and bamboozle – like secret passageways which take you to different places - or labyrinths from stories and legends. But are tunnels always dark and scary? Or can tunnels also be beautiful, brilliant, and fun? Could they have windows and doors? Or take you off to a whole new world!
Join us for this creative architectural workshop to learn all about why tunnels are different shapes and sizes, and why they were built in the first place. We will explore different materials and construction techniques before building a big tunnel of our own, all the way around RIBA’s learning space.
This creative architecture workshop is led by artist educator Zoe Allen for children aged 7 to 10 years.
About Zoe Allen
Zoe Allen is an artist and educator who makes collage, assemblage, sculpture, and paintings. She uses materials foraged from sites which have particular meanings or memories, re-purposing these to create new conversations. Zoe also has a collaborative practice in which she works with other artists to create large scale installation informed by architectural forms and mechanisms.
About the Workshop Series
Our Design Quest workshops inspire younger children to use their imagination and hands-on creativity for a fun introduction to architecture.
