Family Fun Day: We Built This City

Join us to explore the trials and tribulations of unique situations that architects have faced in building iconic structures and make your own decisions and impactful designs come to life in this fun day of creative exploration.

We built this city on rocks with toilet rolls.

Architects don’t always have an easy ride with a blank canvas to add a building to, sometimes there are many challenges and they have to adapt their designs for tricky terrains.

Inspired by our current exhibition Difficult Sites: Architecture Against the Odds we will design, build, and make fantastic structures on this day of free family fun.

Join us to explore the trials and tribulations of unique situations that architects have faced in building iconic structures and make your own decisions and impactful designs come to life in this fun day of creative exploration.

We will be joined by special guests, Josephine Seblon and Robert Sae-Heng, author and illustrator of the newly released 'Mini Architects' book.

In partnership with Zaha Hadid Foundation.

Programme for the day

Tricky Terrains

Drop-in, all day.

How on earth will I build something there?
The best thing about architecting in difficult spaces is coming up with brilliant solutions! Can’t go under it? Can't go over it? How will I navigate all of these obstacles...? We need you to put on your creative-caps and build-big! Tunnel, traverse, leap, jump and create - there's always a way: No solution too silly....Help us build a city on a landscape that’s tricky!

From paper to digital: Drawing with the Zaha Hadid Foundation

The Zaha Hadid Foundation will lead a digital drawing workshop. Use paper to create a simple architectural form, then turn it into a digital drawing using a drawing app and manipulate it in endless ways!

Drop-in workshop throughout the day, iPads will be provided.

Clay Time

Drop-in, all day.

Driven by escalating ecological concerns and the need for green development, many contemporary practices are turning to clay as a build material. In this workshop, Mini architects will be introduced to sustainable design and construction as they build their own “Eco Clay Den” inspired by the first entirely 3D-printed house made using clay or a colourful “Parasol market” inspired by the Dandaji market designed by Mariam Issoufou Kamara.

RIBA Baby Room

Drop in and play, all day. For children under 3 years old.

Bricks over boulders

Drop in, all day.

Take the challenge of build over and around our mini mountain ranges using Lego or blocks.
