North Yorkshire Society of Architects - Biodiversity Net Gain

Join us for an insightful presentation on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) with experienced ecologist Bernadette Lobo. Learn key terminology, explore documents, and see a worked hypothetical project. The session will include Q&A, discussion, tea, coffee, and cake.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is now a mandatory requirement in England, marking a significant shift in how architects approach planning, development, and ecological sustainability. But what does this mean in practice, and how can professionals navigate the complexities of implementing BNG effectively?

This one-hour presentation is designed to provide attendees with a comprehensive introduction to BNG, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to approach new projects with confidence. The session will break down the fundamentals of BNG, explaining key terminology and documents, as well as exploring how the process works. To bring these concepts to life, the presentation will feature a worked example of a hypothetical project, offering practical insights into the application of BNG principles.

In addition to the presentation, there will be time for questions and discussion, creating an opportunity for attendees to engage in meaningful dialogue and gain clarity on any uncertainties.

About the speaker

The presentation will be led by Bernadette Lobo, a seasoned ecologist with decades of experience in the environmental sector. Bernadette has worked with Defra, the Environment Agency, English Nature (now Natural England), Jacobs, and environmental charities, amassing a wealth of knowledge. Despite her extensive background, she describes herself as a sceptical BNG practitioner, providing a grounded and honest perspective on its challenges and opportunities. Her insights are drawn directly from her work conducting numerous BNG assessments, making this presentation both practical and relatable.
