Raise the Roof walking tour with Anthony Palmer

Join us to discover the artworks and architectural motifs within the urban fabric of 66 Portland Place and the surrounding streetscape

Meeting point: RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AD

This walking tour will begin by looking at how our current exhibition, Raise the Roof: Building for Change, has reassessed and reinterpreted the buildings various artworks and architectural motifs. Opened in 1934, when the modern architectural profession was being forged, RIBA’s Grade II* listed home can tell us a lot about the values and beliefs of architects in that period, and of wider society.

The tour will then depart the building to look at motifs and symbols within the surrounding central London streetscape. The ideas that underpin motifs come from architectural traditions and represent cultural identities, and the walk will guide you to look for these symbols within the urban fabric and consider their role in the city today.
