RIBA East Small Practice Network: Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation

Dive into the history of Letchworth Garden City with RIBA East's Small Practice Network's talk on the 1905 'Cheap Cottages Exhibition' - with local historian Josh Tidy.

Join the RIBA East Small Practice Network for a talk from Josh Tidy, Heritage Manager at Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, on 27 March as we take a trip down memory lane to see what all the fuss was about at the turn of the twentieth century.

Exploring this unique chapter in Letchworth's history, and some fascinating innovations in domestic architecture. Using innovative new building materials and methods, the 1905 Cheap Cottages Exhibition provided Letchworth with over 120 new houses, but also acted as a publicity magnet to the fledgling garden city - attracting over 60,000 visitors to the town, journalists from all over the country, and persuading the GNER to create a train station for the town, and making Letchworth a household name for a short time.

Josh Tidy is the Heritage Manager at Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, where he has been exploring and celebrating the history of this unique town for almost twenty years, producing many exhibitions and projects, appearing on radio and tv shows and writing four published books along the way.
