About Drake's Island
Drake’s Island has had a colourful and chequered past. The mysterious six-acre island, a short hop across the water from Plymouth Hoe, is clearly visible from the shore but has been out of bounds to the public for more than thirty years.
The island, which is in the middle of the UK’s first national marine park, has now been bought by local businessman Morgan Phillips. In keeping with the island’s importance as a national monument (the whole island is a scheduled monument) and its importance as a marine conservation area, it will be a ‘green’ development, a plastic-free environment, and making use of renewable wave and tidal energy.
There are plans for a small luxury wedding and conference venue with glorious sea views from all the rooms and an underground spa, but the main emphasis will be on opening the island up for everyone to enjoy.
