RIBA South: church conservation talk

Join the RIBA South conservation July talk to hear from Emma Mullen about the church conservation, saving a 15th century Nave roof from structural collapse at the Abbey Church of St Mary & St Melor, Amesbury.

In 2020, a major conservation repair programme was undertaken to save the 15th century Nave roof from structural collapse, due to extensive deathwatch beetle decay after decades of water ingress. The project covered all aspects of building conservation, including structural carpentry repairs, new sand cast lead (with cast text panels and new ventilation detailing) lath and plaster conservation and masonry repairs. Opportunities were also taken to introduce new oak carvings and decorations to bespoke designs.

Join us for the July talk, that will focus on technical details and offer an insight into how complex structural problems were overcome within very tight programme and budget constraints. It will look at the complexities added by a previously unknown secondary roof structure that had been introduced by the Arts & Crafts architect, Detmar Blow in 1905. It will also look at the moments of ‘delight’ and describe how major repair programmes such as this, may contribute to the historic narrative of our built heritage.
