RIBA Yorkshire SEP Network: Timber buildings and moisture talk

The online session will cover topics such as the importance of service classes in timber design, points of good practice for detailing, and mitigation and remediation strategies.

Small and Emerging Practice representative Paul Wainwright invites you to join us for an informative online joint architecture and engineering session on timber designs and moisture. This session, held in collaboration with Shingi Tarirah, a chartered structural engineer and Associate Lecturer at Central St Martins College of Art in London, promises to be insightful and interactive.

Why timber?

Timber has re-emerged as a key modern construction material due to its sustainability benefits, helping to reduce embodied carbon emissions in building projects. However, the current industry challenges necessitate a deeper understanding of design issues and detailing techniques in regards to moisture to enhance performance and provide assurance to everyone involved.

"In the UK climate, timber can essentially last indefinitely as long as it remains dry," says Andrew Lawrence, Global Timber Lead at ARUP and a strong proponent of structural timber. Although managing moisture is crucial when using timber, it should not deter its use. Lawrence cites examples of well-preserved timber structures that are nearly 1,000 years old. Understanding a material's performance in various contexts is essential, and moisture is a key factor for timber.

About the event

This interactive online session will cover critical topics for including:

  • the importance of service classes in timber design
  • best practices for detailing
  • mitigation and remediation strategies in regards to moisture

This online meet up aims to provide a friendly and sociable platform for RIBA Members to share their experiences and learn from each other on various topics and issues.
