Sheffield Society of Architects: Building visit to 105th Sheffield (High Green) Scout Group

Join Sheffield Society of Architects in exploring this award winning community space, learn about the design process, and hear directly from the designers Race Cottam Associates.

Join the Sheffield Society of Architects for a special visit to the award-winning 105th Sheffield Scouts Headquarters, designed by Race Cottam Associates. This innovative project, which proudly received both the People’s Choice Award and a Judges' Special Award for Community Value at the 2024 Sheffield Design Awards, replaces a dated 1960s scout hut with a dynamic, purpose-built facility.

Delivered in an impressively short timescale thanks to government funding and strong collaboration with the Scout group, the new headquarters has quickly become a cherished space for the local community. Drawing inspiration from the form of the classic ridge tent—an iconic symbol in scouting culture—the architectural design cleverly balances tradition with contemporary function.

The result is a robust and adaptable two-storey brick building, offering flexible spaces that accommodate a wide variety of activities for both Scouts and the wider community. The building is not only functional but also engaging, creating a safe and inspiring environment for young people to learn, grow, and thrive.

The visit will offer attendees the chance to explore the design process, material choices, and community involvement that made the project such a success. It is a fantastic opportunity to hear directly from the architects at Race Cottam Associates and learn how thoughtful, community-focused design can have a lasting social impact.
