Sheffield Society of Architects: What if Sheffield's Heart of the City was replicated in Castlegate?

The Sheffield Society of Architects, in collaboration with SCT, FOSC, and SPRT, invites industry professionals to a City Centre Vision Day. The event will explore how lessons from Heart of the City can shape Castlegate’s transformation, focusing on urban development, heritage, and place-making through discussions and collaborative sessions.

The Sheffield Society of Architects, in collaboration with the Sheffield Civic Trust (SCT), Friends of Sheffield Castle (FOSC), and the Sheaf & Porter Rivers Trust (SPRT), invites industry professionals to a City Centre Vision Day.

This event will assess the impact of Sheffield’s Heart of the City (HoC) project and explore how its lessons can inform the transformation of Castlegate.

Once the heart of Sheffield, Castlegate has faced uncertainty due to investment shifts toward HoC. However, with key institutions, council-owned development sites, and major new projects like Harmony Works, S1 Art Space, and the Sheffield Castle Site, the area holds great potential for renewal. This event will foster debate on high-quality urban development and place-making, focusing on these two significant city-centre areas.

The day will be split into two parts: the morning will review HoC’s progress and outcomes, while the afternoon will explore how its insights can shape Castlegate’s future. Discussions will consider Sheffield’s unique identity, informed by the Academy of Urbanism consultation (2013).

Open to urban design professionals, developers, council representatives, traders, civic and heritage groups, and the public, the event will feature diverse perspectives, topic-relevant materials, and interactive group discussions.

A light lunch will be provided, and networking will be encouraged. Attendees may join for either the morning or afternoon, though the event is designed as a whole. Notes and key takeaways will be shared widely, with follow-up discussions invited across relevant groups.
