Join RIBA Learning and award-winning Architecture for Kids CIC as they present their annual Soho Kids Xmas Lights project, showcasing the designs of pupils from Soho Parish Primary School.
This project aims to bring the community together through a celebration of lights during the darkest months of the year.
The children at the school have designed Christmas street lights inspired by their local area, keeping to this year's theme of lighting, identity of place, and fashion. This acts as a way to engage the community of Soho to reflect on the importance of the identity of place and its development.
The street party and switch-on event will include:
- awards ceremony and speeches
- carol singing
- music and entertainment
- mulled wine and mince pies
- merchandise with the lights' designs: t-shirts, wrapping paper, and Christmas cards
About the project
The project, now in its third annual edition, was co-produced by:
- Antonio Capelao - architect and RIBA Architecture Ambassador
- Hannah Peaty - Assitant Head Teacher at Soho Parish School
- Joshua Brooks - RIBA Learning Manager and architect
The project involved over 130 pupils from the school, with the best designs being turned into physical Christmas lights. The children researched their local community, cultures and traditions and visited the London Fashion and Textile Museum to help gain inspiration for their designs.
The designs were judged by a committee made up of local businesses, local residents, Soho Parish School alumni students, RIBA Learning, and many more.
The 14 winning designs, and the 35 from the two previous editions, have been transformed into large LED lighting displays with help from Blachere Illumination UK and will be exhibited throughout Soho from 14 November.
