Architecture walking tour: King’s Cross – steam, gas, and coal - October 2023

Join Paula Cooze on a walking tour to explore the architectural strategy for Kings Cross, London and how it has manifested itself in the preservation of statement buildings in the area

Join Blue Badge Guide Paula Cooze to revisit Kings Cross as it nears the final stage in this massive regeneration project.

For over twenty years the area behind Kings Cross Station has been the focus of a huge regeneration project, the largest in Europe. The area is being transformed with new streets, parks, homes, shops, offices, galleries, bars, restaurants, schools, and even a university. The walk will consider the architectural strategy for Kings Cross and how this has manifested itself in some of the statement buildings and the ever-changing architecture. The range of different architectural styles is dazzling, as is the ways new technology is changing the face of development.

The area has been entertained by the big technology companies who have a gigantic presence; we will consider how the current financial situation and reduction in the workforce may impact the success of this regeneration.

Key to the development is the preservation of the buildings, which echo the history of life in Kings Cross in the industrial age. This walk will consider how successfully this has been achieved and at what cost for the local residents.

Meeting at the rear of Kings Cross Station, and the walk ends near Kings Cross Station.
