What was the most remarkable project you’ve been involved with?

One of our most remarkable projects was our involvement in the Freedom Plaza in Boston, the site of the iconic “The Embrace” statue. This space, often bustling with visitors, sightseers, and street artists, became more accessible and safer thanks to our custom tactile stud installation.

Studmarc was selected by MASS Design Group to design and install tactile studs as part of the memorial dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King. “The Embrace” stands 20 feet tall and 40 feet wide, depicting the heartfelt moment when Dr. King embraced his wife Coretta after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Located in Boston Common, a major public park downtown, this project required the installation of tactile metal studs for two specific purposes.

Firstly, these studs serve as a guide for individuals with visual impairments, ensuring they can navigate the memorial area safely and effectively. Secondly, the studs serve as a deterrent, preventing skateboarders from using the area adjacent to granite benches for tricks and stunts.

Harmonising both functionality and aesthetics was essential. The tactile studs had to blend into the design of the memorial while maintaining their practical purpose.

We are proud to have contributed to such a significant project, helping to make this meaningful tribute to Dr. King accessible to all visitors. Our tactile studs not only enhance the safety and usability of the space but also preserve the artistic integrity of this inspiring memorial.
