Tell us about your practice? What do you stand for?
At Assael, we believe in creating sustainable, well-designed communities and neighbourhoods where people want to live, work, and thrive. Through collaboration with clients, design teams, and other stakeholders, we focus on delivering quality developments that enhance both the built environment and the lives of residents. With thoughtful masterplanning and innovation, we aim to create vibrant, inclusive spaces that foster connection and wellbeing, shaping the future of urban living with care and purpose.
What differentiates you from other architects?
What sets Assael apart is our holistic, community-driven approach to design. We don’t just create buildings - we create vibrant, sustainable places where people genuinely want to live. Our process begins with understanding the unique character of each site and its community, ensuring that our designs are not only functional but also deeply rooted in their surroundings. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do, working closely with stakeholders and integrating sustainability at every level. We also believe that undertaking post-occupancy evaluation is an important part of the design process that provides feedback for future projects.
What projects are you currently working on?
Assael are working on many exciting projects across the UK and internationally, including several large-scale neighbourhood masterplans. We also have several Build to Rent and Co-living schemes both in the planning stage and under construction. Key projects include Walthamstow Mall, which will deliver 495 BTR homes across two buildings of 34 and 27 storeys, which we are delivering using off-site volumetric construction and Nine Elms Overstation Development, which delivers 479 BTR homes for Connected Living London (the joint venture between TfL and Grainger). Most recently, we gained planning permission for John Lewis Partnership’s first BTR homes in the UK.
We co-authored the Urban Land Institute's (ULI) Build to Rent Best Practice Guide commissioned by the UK Government and contributors to ULI’s European Co-living Best Practice Guide.
What have been the highlights for you in the past year?
Over the last year we have celebrated a milestone 30 years of Assael, become a B Corp certified practice, and continued to design and deliver award winning schemes including:
- The Almere, Milton Keynes was voted as the Top Rated BTR Community in the South of England at the HomeViews Awards
- Our pioneering Co-living projects in Wandsworth and Battersea are complete and fully occupied.
- Sunday Mills won a RIBA London Award and a British Homes Award
- Florence Dock won the Building and Architecture award at the Co-living Awards in Amsterdam.
Is there anything exciting on the horizon?
We are looking forward to expanding further into the Middle East through our Bahrain office (Licensed Category A) and have several exciting ongoing and upcoming projects. In this rapidly evolving market, we are designing culturally responsive architecture that aims to create vibrant, future-proof neighbourhoods that reflect the region’s unique character.
